Assessment for GCSE, AS and A level exams 2022

Dear parent

It is a pleasure to see all our learners back in school and the vast majority working extremely hard in their lessons. Learners sitting external exams in the summer have faced unprecedented challenges and disruption, however, we are working hard with our learners to mitigate these challenges and ensure they are well prepared for their exams.

We have recently received communication from Qualifications Wales (Download qw-cc21-04e-lettertolearners-arrangementsfor2022 ) outlining their approach to summer exams; a copy of their letter has been emailed to you and is available on our website. The main points are as follows:

1. Welsh Government, Qualifications Wales and WJEC expect exams to go ahead as planned in the summer. To take into account the lost curriculum time due to the pandemic, the WJEC have made significant changes to each qualification. The qualification changes have been made following a consultation with schools and will enable learners to move on to their next stage of learning or employment. Heads of Department have amended their learning plans to ensure they are teaching the correct content and skills. Qualifications Wales and the WJEC have reassured schools that the grading process will be fair and that they will take into account the disruption experienced by learners.

2. If Covid cases continue to rise, and exam series are cancelled, there is a contingency plan in place. Schools will be asked to award grades based on the work completed by learners during their qualification. We await further guidance from Qualifications Wales but the evidence used might include:

• Summative Assessments, APPs and mock exams completed during the qualification.

• Completed Non-Examined Assessments / coursework.

• Classwork and homework completed during the qualification.

It is therefore essential that all our learners try their very best as teachers can only award grades that can be validated by work completed by our pupils and students. Now is the time for our learners to work harder than ever before and ensure their teachers are provided with enough evidence to award top grades if exams are cancelled.

We will continue to provide regular updates via our website and social media. If you have any specific questions please contact your son's/ daughter's Head of Year.

Yours faithfully,

Mr G Turner
Deputy Head

Miss S Reed
Head of 6th Form

Changes in WG advice for household contacts of Covid-19

Dear parents and carers,

We are writing in relation to the recent statement that came out from the Welsh Government who are changing their guidance about household contacts. From Monday 11th October, the Welsh Government are advising that if anyone in your household tests positive for Covid-19, as well as undertaking PCR testing on day 2 and day 8, that young people should also use the Lateral Flow Devices to test every day for 7 days. This should start on the day a household contact is confirmed as positive from either a lateral flow device or a PCR test result.

Lateral flow device testing kits continue to be available through school for the routine twice weekly testing. Should anyone require further test kits for the purposes of testing due to being a household contact, please contact your year team.

Further information about this can be found on the following link:

Yours sincerely

Open Evening (Virtual)

A Welcome from the Headteacher

Prestatyn High School is a transformational school. The outstanding results we achieve for pupils and students, coupled with the first-rate pastoral care we provide, make us an excellent place to grow, develop and gain an education that will prepare young people for the rest of their lives. The school is also transforming the building too! We are working hard to make sure that our facilities are renewed so that all learners can work and develop in a modern, effective environment. These improvements include the new state-of-the-art science labs and the refurbishment of all of our sports facilities. We are exceptionally proud of the work that we do with our pupils and students, and I look forward to welcoming our next cohort of Year 7s so that they can enjoy their time in education and thrive in this academic environment. I am delighted to welcome you to our great school, and I am honoured to be the Headteacher of such a vibrant and successful school.

Whilst we are going through such an uncertain and difficult time globally, it is essential that schools remain fully open, safe, and that we deliver high-quality education to our young people. Prestatyn High School has set up every area of the school to ensure the safety of pupils and staff. Protecting all members of the school remains our top priority. Over the past 18 months, we have ensured that all members of our community have been safe, and we have lost very few learning days to the pandemic. Indeed, when other schools across the county were directed to send home year groups multiple times, we only had to isolate one year group for one period of time.
No stone has been left unturned so that we can be sure that we are as bio-secure as possible. When you choose to send your son or daughter to our school, you can do so in the knowledge that we will keep them safe.
Whilst making sure that our school is as safe as possible, we are also tireless in our pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning and delivering high quality lessons to our learners. Joining Prestatyn High School will guarantee an excellent education, extremely high standards, and outcomes that will allow your son or daughter to move onto the next stage of their academic journey. They will be equipped with the right skills, qualifications and attitudes. We are determined to improve the life chances for all the young people in the Prestatyn area and beyond.
We are exceptionally proud of all of our pupils and staff, and the outcomes we achieve reinforce our belief that what we are doing day to day is effective. The high standards we pride ourselves on are having an impact.
In our latest visit by Estyn, we were judged to be making ‘Good progress’ in all areas. My passion is for all our learners to be challenged and supported to achieve high standards in all they do. The staff here at Prestatyn High School work non-stop to ensure our pupils and students enjoy their time at school, that they work hard, and that they achieve good outcomes. In an ever-changing education landscape, our focus is fixed firmly on strategies to further improve the quality of teaching, learning, assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare for all our young people. This first-class education will provide them with the knowledge to achieve well in examinations whilst developing lifelong skills that will prepare them for their future.
Please join us at our online open evening and book to visit the school.

School Covid Categorisation

Dear Parents/Carers,

[School Covid categorisation - Download the letter]

It is great to have the learners back in school and a delight to see them engaged in their learning. Unfortunately, Covid-19 is still prevalent within our community. I would like to reassure everyone that we have a robust risk assessment in place and we are working closely with DCC, Public Health Wales and TTP to minimise the impact of Covid.

Today, Denbighshire County Council and Public Health Wales have categorised all secondary schools in Denbighshire as amber due to the prevalence of Covid in our community. This means we must remain cautious as a community and follow strict rules to minimise the transmission of Covid. Prestatyn High was already operating under the regulations required for an amber school due to the few but regular cases we have had in school. We are aware of the growing number of cases within the community and we continue to do everything we can to protect all pupils and staff.

What measures have we taken and will continue to take:

• An expectation for all staff and learners to wear face masks in communal areas, such as corridors and diner.

• Where possible, social distancing. • Good hand and respiratory hygiene.

• At present, there is no expectation for staff and learners to wear face masks in classrooms.

• An expectation for staff and learners to continue to test twice weekly using the Lateral Flow Devices.

• Continue to engage with TTP.

We respectfully ask all parents and carers to support the school in our efforts to keep everyone as safe as possible. Please could you remind your son / daughter to bring a face mask to school every day, continue to LFD test, and engage in Covid friendly routines inside and outside of school.

If you are named as a contact by TTP, please follow their advice and book a PCR test.

Yours faithfully,

Neil Foley - B.Sc. MA Pennaeth/Headteacher
