Law - Prestatyn Sixth
Qualification type: Level 3 GCE AS & GCE A
A-Level Law gives you the tools to understand and navigate the complex reality we live in, where knowing your rights and understanding accountability can make all the difference. Our course offers an exciting exploration of how laws are created and interpretated and how individuals can drive law reform. You’ll explore the criminal process from trial to sentencing, including the role of juries, and even participate in a mock trial.
You’ll then move on to study tort law, where through real-life cases, you’ll discover how the law determines who is responsible when someone is harmed, and what remedies are available to the victim.
In Year 13, you'll dive into human rights, studying the key protections guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights, including the right to a fair trial and freedom of expression. You’ll examine the delicate balance between police powers—such as stop and search—and individual freedoms, alongside the legal remedies available for police misconduct. The course will also cover important issues like communication interception, defamation, trespass, and harassment. You’ll explore how human rights are enforced through domestic courts, judicial review, and the European Court of Human Rights, gaining a deeper understanding of how these rights are protected and upheld in law.
In Criminal Law, you’ll explore key offences like murder, manslaughter, and various types of assault and battery, alongside serious harm offences like ABH and GBH. You’ll learn about the defences that can be used in these cases, such as insanity, intoxication, and automatism (acting without control), as well as self-defence and duress, providing you with an insight into how the law addresses crime and the defences that can change the outcome of a case.
Alongside gaining knowledge, you’ll build valuable skills—critical thinking, analysis, and argumentation—that are assets in any career. At some point, you’re likely to come across situations where understanding the law is essential.
