NHS Wales Test, Trace, Protect has been informed of a confirmed case of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) in Prestatyn High.

Prestatyn High remains open. It is working closely with Public Health Wales, the Local Authority and NHS Wales Test, Trace and Protect to ensure that all the appropriate measures are in place to protect students, staff and the wider community. This letter is to inform you of the current situation and to provide advice on how to support your child.

All close contacts of the case have been identified and have received appropriate advice to self-isolate.

This has impacted 18 6th form students and one member of staff.

An additional 4 students, 3 Y12 and 1 Y13 are now having to self-isolate up to and including the 29th October

1 member of staff must self-isolate up to and including the 29th October

As previously mentioned as a precautionary measure all Y13 students will not attend school from this coming Monday, for one week and will access school work via Teams

Your child has not been identified as a close contact and therefore does not need to self-isolate and does not require testing for COVID-19. They can continue to attend school as usual.

However, as a precaution, please be alert for any symptoms of COVID-19:

  • A new or continuous cough
  • A high temperature
  • A loss of or change to sense of smell or taste

If your child develops any of these symptoms, even if they are mild:

  • Book a test for them by phoning 119 or through the online portal: https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test
  • Inform the school that they are unwell with COVID-19 symptoms and that you have requested a test
  • Your child should self-isolate for 10 days from when their symptoms started
  • All other household members should isolate for 14 days from when your child developed symptoms
  • Do not visit a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital but if you require medical advice please contact NHS 111 or telephone your GP; if there is a medical emergency phone 999
  • Please follow the advice provided when your child receives their test result

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading, there are things that everyone in your family can do to help. These include:

  • washing hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • using hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • washing hands as soon as they get home
  • covering their mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not their hands) when they cough or sneeze
  • putting used tissues in the bin immediately and washing hands afterwards

Lunch and breaktime – Please bring a coat to school

Dear Parent/ Carer,

I hope you are all keeping safe and well during these unpredictable times. To keep the school safe and secure during this challenging period, it is necessary to work within our current strict, Covid-19 parameters and risk assessment. These measures involve keeping our year groups in ‘bubbles’ and not allowing them to mix. Each year group has its own designated area during breaktime and lunch so that they can get fresh air during their free time. Due to the limited space inside the school we have to use all of the outdoor spaces to keep the pupils apart. This also means that they are separated during their allocated time in the diner, when one year group moves into the diner, another year group goes outside.

As the weather turns against us, we will still need to utilise all of the outdoor spaces to keep the bubbles apart unless the weather is extreme. Only on occasions of heavy rain or other similar weather conditions will we bring the pupils in from their designated outdoor space. I request that all pupils bring a coat to school so that they can stay warm whilst outside. I ask all parents to remind your son/ daughter to bring a coat with them to school.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Claire Turner
Deputy Headteacher

Face Coverings on School Transport

Dear all Parents, Carers and Pupils

In order for school transport to resume at full capacity after the period of school closure, Denbighshire County Council (DCC) made the decision that all students and pupils must wear a face covering when accessing their buses. This is to ensure the safety of all pupils accessing the transport whilst also protecting the drivers.

We as a school support this fully. During the school day we are able to keep all pupils within their ‘year group bubble’, but during transport to and from school, pupils may come into relatively close

contact with a pupil from another year group. Wearing a face covering and good hand hygiene will reduce the risk of the virus spreading and keep us all safe.

All of the measures the school and DCC are putting in place are to protect our school community.

I ask that all parents and pupils support us in this so that we can avoid a second school closure or partial closure. We do these things to protect the vulnerable and also protect the education of our young people.

Please see the Head of Year if any pupil does not have a face covering.

Many thanks with your support on this.

Neil Foley - B.Sc. MA.

PHS returns to full pupil capacity

The start to the academic year with new arrangements to keep our school community safe has been excellent. Now that we are back to full capacity, there is a palpable air of relief and happiness around the school. The pupils and staff are delighted that we are back to some sort of normal, following all of the additional arrangements that are in place so that we are as bio-secure as possible.

Our attendance is higher than ever and we are making sure that any pupils are making rapid progress and bridging any gaps brought about by the extended closure due to COVID-19.

Whilst we have had a very positive start to the new academic year, we remain vigilant at all times to ensure that all staff and pupils are safe now and remain safe in the future.

Y11 – ROA Evening – cancellation

Dear Parents/ Carers and Pupils

We hope you are all well and have had an enjoyable summer break.

As you know we had hoped to come together on the 18th November to celebrate and acknowledge all the hard work and achievements of Year 11 2020. However, Rhyl Pavilion has confirmed today that they are not taking any bookings for the remainder of this year.

Whilst we share your disappointment with this decision we understand the need to maintain all Covid-19 disciplines. Even though we have not been able to organise a celebration of your success we are sure that you already hold many fond memories of your time at PHS that you can carry with you throughout your life.

If you would like a copy of your ROA folder please email eathomas@prestatynhigh.co.uk with your address. We will endeavor to post requested ROA folders this half-term.

We wish you well for the future, and we look forward to welcoming many of you back into the Sixth Form.

ADVICE FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS ON REQUESTING COVID TESTING

https://gov.wales/apply-coronavirus-covid-19-test

Before requesting a test you must have at least one of the following symptoms:

  1. a new continuous cough
  2. a high temperature
  3. loss of or change to sense of smell or taste

If you develop one of these symptoms follow the self-isolation guidance.

The test is only effective for those who are experiencing coronavirus symptoms and needs to be taken in the first 5 days of having symptoms. It only checks if you have coronavirus right now and not if you have already had the virus.

Some parents have been directed to phone their GP for a test – the correct process is below.

Parents / Guardians can apply for a test by calling the free number 119 between the hours of 7am to 11pm.  People with hearing or speech difficulties can call 18001 119. This service is available to assist parents / guardians through the process of booking and taking a test but cannot provide clinical advice. If you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home or if your condition gets worse, or your symptoms do not get better after 7 days, use the 111 online coronavirus service. If you do not have internet access, call 111. In a medical emergency, dial 999
